Literacy

At Albion North Primary School, the teaching and learning of literacy is guided by the Victorian Curriculum 2.0, ensuring a strong, consistent foundation in reading, writing, speaking, and listening across all year levels. Our approach is structured, evidence-based, and developmentally appropriate, fostering confident, capable, and engaged communicators.

In Foundation to Year 2, literacy instruction places a strong emphasis on the development of foundational skills in reading and writing. All students participate in daily phonics, phonological awareness, and phonemic awareness instruction, aligned with the Victorian F–2 Phonics Reading Approach. This includes the implementation of the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program, which supports the systematic development of early reading skills.

Students also engage in one hour of reading and one hour of writing daily, with explicit instruction tailored to their individual learning needs.

In Years 3 to 6, students continue to develop their literacy skills through one hour of reading and one hour of writing each day. Reading instruction includes a strong focus on comprehension, vocabulary development, and fluency, along with explicit teaching of word work to build spelling and word knowledge. Writing instruction is designed to extend students’ ability to plan, draft, edit, and publish texts across a range of genres and purposes.

Our whole-school commitment to high-quality literacy instruction ensures all students are supported to become successful readers and writers, prepared for the demands of further learning and life beyond school.
